Bio

Tri is an illuminating fine artist who fuses lights with hearts to bring forth their feelings to the physical world in hopes to create a healthier relationship with those emotions. Their current works blend the worlds of neon with sculpture and features stylized aesthetics inspired by cartoons of the late 90s and early 2000s. Tri brings forth a level of fabricated nostalgia that captures an inter-generational audience. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, they went on to receive their BFA from the Columbus College of Art in Design before making the move to Chicago, Illinois, where they received their MFA in Art and Technology studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. They have had their work shown in Lightwriters Neon, the Chicago Center for Art and Technology, Zhou B. Art Center, and Manifest Gallery, and has had their work published in Botticelli Literary Magazine.

Statement

Growing up fascinated by transformative light in 90s anime like Sailor Moon, Pokémon and Digimon sparked my interest in self-evolution and universal empathy, leading me to explore emotions through sculptural hearts. I utilize the form of the cartoon styled heart as a connection to our emotions, since in parts of society we tend to refer to these moments as matters of the heart. From works referencing “with a heavy heart” made out of concrete to ideas of validation explored through heart shaped mirrors.

I approach each emotion as a distinct entity to be studied, understanding its unique qualities so I can give it physical form to reflect the toll the metaphysical has on our physical bodies. Often I use neon and other light sources because, like emotions, light emanates from within but extends outward to affect everything around it. It is with understanding these things that we as humans are able to evolve and transcend into stronger bonds with ourselves and others. With my work I hope viewers gain insight into how emotions manifest physically and connect with our shared humanity through feeling.
